The Only Living Boy in New York (2017) Review

Thomas Webb is a recent college graduate living in New York City and currently at a crossroads in his life, unsure what he is going to do next. Everything is about to hit a different level when he also gets involved in his father’s mistress.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thomas is struggling to come to terms with moving out of the home with his parents and getting settled in a new area of NYC. He does have a crush on his friend Mimi, but she was not feeling anything back towards him. His best relationship comes from a new neighbour W.F. who he connects with and takes advice from. Everything would take a strange shift though when Thomas spotted his father with another woman, he wants nothing more than to protect his mother Judith who he believes cannot cope with Ethan’s antics.

Johanna the woman Ethan is having the affair with is then pretty much stalked by Thomas, as he is rather infatuated by this woman. Everything goes even more crazy when she begins to sleep with Thomas as well as still seeing Ethan. Which let’s face it is extremely messed up, I mean could a person really do anything worse than sleeping with both a father and son? When it all comes out as well, I was rather shocked with Ethan’s reaction to shout at Thomas about it because surely that doesn’t really make much sense.

Anyway while this was happening a lot of focus was on Thomas and how he wanted nothing more than to be a writer. Ethan was in publishing and that was also how he met Johanna, not forgetting that W.F. was also a published author. I won’t spoil the big twist within the film as quite frankly I did not see. it coming, although it does make certain scenes and moments a little different (just).

I found myself fully invested within the story and was very curious to how it was all going to work out, which surely has to be a credit towards the script and writer! The cast was also impressive as well, I mean I went fully in for Jeff Bridges that has to be said. Then we have Pierce Brosnan and Cynthia Nixon leading the line which was also great. Not forgetting Kate Beckinsale in a supporting role as well. Callum Turner was relatable in the leading role, haven’t we all had that crossroads moment (if you’re super young then don’t worry it is coming).

  1. Not sure if you know the origin of the title: it’s a song from Simon & Garfunkel of course, written by Paul Simon as Art Garfunkel was in Mexico shooting “Catch-22″….he neglected to return to New York for the recording of their seminal album “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, leaving Paul alone waiting as the recording sessions were canceled over and over…and Simon wrote the song to chastise him: “Tom, get your plane ride on time”…is the opening lyric, and refers to their name “Tom & Jerry”, which they started singing together with…even though the album was a massive hit and won Album Of The Year at the Grammys, Paul broke them up over the incident!
