The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) Review

Frankie Machine a drug addict thought he was over it all after spending time in prison. However, being released back into the world was going to have its temptations and issues, as he attempted to go straight and lead a more normal life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Frankie has a good attitude as he is released from prison with a new passion for playing the drums, he sees this as a chance at a different life. Being reunited with friends and his wife Zosh. She is in a wheelchair which she claims to still need after being involved in a car crash which was caused by a drunk Frankie. She has actually recovered and keeping that from him as she believes it is the only reason he is still with her.

It doesn’t take long before he is reunited with an old lover Molly, who empowers him a lot more than Zosh and wants to see him happy and make a success of himself. He doesn’t want to be a card dealer and in that drug infested world that he felt he had broken away from. It was never ever going to be that easy with the men around him wanting a piece of him.

The film at the time of release caused a lot of controversy given the subject matter of a drug addict and showing the truly awful and bad things that can happen if you choose that path. I think that is something rather incredible really that the filmmakers really managed to push the film to get released. Even watching it now it has so many amazing moments that you should really take note of, and it could quite frankly help people.

I think it also highlights just how you have to be lucky to find a couple of people who care about you deeply and the rest of the people you come across just want to use you without caring what happens. I really do think that the film delves so nicely into that world and gives you so many things to think about, long after you’ve finished watching.

Frank Sinatra was very impressive in the leading role and he was nominated for an Oscar for his efforts. With the amount of charm he possesses it was so easy to be on his side and want to see him succeed, seeing his potential downfall and the impact of taking drugs and having it worked out of him the hard way was really impressive. We are also given two fantastic female performances from Kim Novak and the devious Eleanor Parker.
