X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) Review

When the world’s first Mutant is awakened it is up to the X-Men to unite and put a stop to the Apocalypse he is going to create!

I will admit that I was not really expecting very much from this instalment as found “Days of Future Past” to be a little bit much and confusing. I thought from the trailers that this one did not look fantastic either, I can happily say that I was wrong and found this to be a solid X-Men film and enjoyed it!

To begin the story we had to be taken back to Ancient Egypt and see how Apocalypse was last seen. As he was attempting to transfer into a new body (he also takes the other mutants power) to went very wrong and he was therefore trapped inside the pyramid. He always had four followers, the four horsemen to be exact. So when he is brought back we just know which Mutant he is going to want the most. Magneto.

It is all a little bit more complicated than that though as we see how Raven is living and Charles growing the school and really offering a place for young mutants to feel save. We also get three characters we have seen before in a much younger form. Those being Jean, Scott and Nightcrawler, each with a very important part to play in the events.

I guess the main thing we are all waiting for is to see how Charles loses all of his hair and I will warn you it is very near the end and possibly something that you will work out as the story goes on. Ten years after Erik had all of the humans terrified but he gives himself a new life, which certainly has some of very powerful scenes to unfold.

I thought it was a very good addition to the X-Men films and even a lot better than some of them as well. I really wasn’t expecting to like it either as I mentioned earlier the trailer did not make it look very appealing at all. It is therefore great to have a nice surprise, especially with the 2 hours 24 minute running time. But don’t let that put you off at all, plenty of things go on to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat at times. Managing to keep some good moments of humour as well.

At times though I will admit I was wondering if the whole X-Men Universe actually still fits together very well. Parts of it seem to fit perfectly while other parts tend to contradict the earlier films, yet later in date story. Although I guess that is not really a massive problem as we already know they have totally wiped what happened in The Last Stand (and rightly so it was awful).

The interesting thing is to see if they do anything else to bridge the gaps in between and if so which direction that will take them in. I also must mention that I thought Apocalypse looked like a blue version of Ivan Ooze from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film! Shame we couldn’t have had him looking more like Oscar Isaac, an impressive effort even if the tone of the voice was very off at times.

Overall though I really did enjoy this one and certainly do recommend that you make an effort to catch this one. Certainly one of the better comic book based films to come out in recent years!

  1. Great to see you enjoyed this one! Getting way too much undeserved hate! Didn’t love it as much as Days of Future Past which is only second to X2 to me but this ain’t far behind in all honesty. Great review!

    1. I have realised that I have not reviewed the “older” ones on my blog. So currently have X-Men on Netflix even though I only watched it a few weeks ago. X2 was always my favourite as well 🙂

I didn’t rush to see this as didn’t think it looked great from the trailers, nice to be wrong!

    1. I can understand where your coming from with that Dan. I found more worked that I expected from the trailers and how confusing Days of Future Past became.

  2. Great review Caz, glad you enjoyed Apocalypse! Shame you weren’t all that taken with Days of Future Past (but I get what you say about the twisty turny timeline), I’d see this was at least as good, looking forward to seeing where they go with the X-Men next.

    1. Yeah I’m very interested to see what they do next with X-Men and we had another standard Wolverine cameo but an important link to how he escaped 😉

      1. Yeah, I had mixed feelings about that cameo. It made sense but not completely necessary…it actually would’ve been perfect if it was serving to introduce Hugh Jackman’s eventual successor!
