Our Friend (2019) Review

Going through tough times is when you really need a good friend, Dane proves over and over again to both Nicole and Matt that he is that person.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dane and Nicole were both part of the same theatre group and through that friendship he also becomes friends with her husband Matt and acts as true support to them both through some difficult times and for the worst of times when Nicole is terminal with cancer. Moving his own personal struggles to the side to help his friends through this and their young daughters Molly and Evie, somehow creating joy when all else is lost.

Ok, so obviously when deciding to watch this film I knew it wasn’t going to be easy with the terminal cancer part of the storyline but what I did not expect was another blow of how close Dane had been to ending it all for himself. That was a huge curveball to add to the already emotional set up of this story, which is actually based on a true story and real life events.

It was one of those films where you know that you are going to start crying at some point, but you try to stop yourself from doing that too early as you know that you’ll not be able to then stop crying. It certainly packs a lot of emotion into the film and makes you wonder and realise who will be there for you if you were struggling.

I have such a massive soft spot for Jason Segel it has to be said and I always think he just nails the roles he is in, that is no different in this one and he really brings it as Dane. Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson both are brilliant as well, really bringing it all together. With impressive performances from Isabella Kai and Violet McGraw.
