The Object of My Affection (1998) Review

When George Hanson is broken up with by his long term boyfriend, he moves in with Nina Borowiski who just happens to get pregnant and then starts to fall in love with him.

⭐️⭐️

We cannot help but feel sorry for pretty much all of the characters in this film as nothing goes right for them at all. Nina should be very happy with her boyfriend Vince, but it just doesn’t fully feel right with him. Moving in George who is an openly gay man should not become an issue at all. Her sister Constance just wants what’s best for her and wishes she would make better decisions.

That doesn’t include wanting to raise her baby with her gay roommate turned best friend. Especially with the way she then treats Vince, the baby-daddy. Her behaviour becomes even more ridiclous when she attempts to have sex with George and thinking she can turn him. Obviously that was never going to be a thing and she acts as though they are husband and wife, which is when the film really started to annoy me. I seriously just wanted George to remind her that he has always been and will always be wanting to spend him life with another man.

I guess the ending was quite nice but it took too long to get to it and I had already been too annoyed with Nina’s character within the film. As it just didn’t make any sense at all, which is frustrating as it could have been a very interesting and at the time groundbreaking film in the LGBT film genre.
