Musicals: From Stage to Screen

I have always loved and adored musicals but I am fully aware that the genre seems to be the most difficult to please people who aren’t the biggest fans of them. After rewatching Chicago and the up and coming release of In the Heights it has me thinking about musicals going from stage to screen. Then if you have actually seen them on stage before the film adaptation or if you see the film first and then the stage musical. For obvious reasons a lot of changes have to be made when taking a show from the stage and putting it on screen, this is the main reason I feel Wicked has been left in production for around 12 years now. It’s one of my favourite stage musicals that I have currently seen nine times, but I really cannot picture how it will transfer to film without losing its magic and quite frankly being rather ridiculous on screen?

In the Heights is a show that I have been very lucky to see on stage twice, the first time on Broadway the night before it won the Tony Award for Best New Musical in 2008 and then in the West End in 2016. Both times I appreciated the unique nature of the music and quite frankly I think it is better than Hamilton. Both obviously coming from the genius mind of Lin-Manuel Miranda, seeing him perform on Broadway was certainly very special. I have been looking forward to seeing the film adaption of In the Heights since it was announced and that is now only a few weeks away. The reviews that have been released so far have been extremely positive and this increases my excitement to see the film. As we always seem to go through phases with musicals and one often leads to more being released.

I am really hoping that people who are not the biggest fans of musicals will give In the Heights a watch though as it really is not like any other musical you have seen before, we have come a very long way from the traditional musical numbers and acting. The rap/hiphop style is something so unique and different that it is a true joy to witness, I feel I have now moved more into begging people to see it, even though I haven’t myself yet either. I just hope audiences will be open minded and see something that dares to be different.

Music Stars at the Movies

I have recently re-watched the Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper A Star Is Born and I then received this amazing infographic from Betway with fantastic research around awards and music stars which just seemed like perfect timing. While Lady Gaga has been nominated for her amazing turn in A Star Is Born, the transition from music to film is not always a smooth one. This makes for interesting reading in all honesty, to show that they are either a massive hit or a masssive flop!

Musical Moments

Each Monday (hopefully) a song or part from a movie musical will be blogged about. This may vary from a scene, a musical number, facts about the musical as a whole or just general chat about the musical. Occasionally comparisons maybe made between the stage show and movie version.

If you have read my blog for any length of time this will all probably come as no surprise to you and you will already know that I am a total musicals geek! I figured it would be good for me to write more about different aspects of musicals and have been trying to figure out a way to do that for quite some time now. I think this musical moments feature on a Monday is certainly the way forward for me to spend some time writing about musicals.

I know the musical genre is often only enjoyed by a select few, everyone still seems to have one musical that they actually quite like (even if they struggle to admit it). So hopefully this feature will at some point have something for everyone in the different movies that will come up! It may even encourage people to watch more musicals.

If you want something from a movie musical to be included in the feature at some point please feel free to ask!

The awards which like to honour the worst films of the year! Yes its all just a bit of fun and to laugh at really. But the Razzie nominations were released last night, yes the day before the Oscar nominations are due out. Interesting as Sandra Bullock could end up as the best and worst actress of the year . . . you see what they have done there.

They even have worst movie, actor and actress of the decade awards to give out.

What do you make of the Razzies?

Check out the nominations

Top 10 – Movie Musicals

I am a huge fan of musicals. I love going to see shows at the theatre and have seen shows on the West End and Broadway. So therefore I absoloutly adore movie versions of musicals. I have decided to do a countdown of my current top 10 movie musicals. I have actually found this list very hard to complete, as just having a top 10 was very difficult for me. But I managed to get it sorted in the end, haha. I kept remembering about different movies and probably will realise later that I have missed a favorite out. But never mind, I could always re-do this list in a few months.
