Date: Sunday 19th June 2022
Venue: Stadium of Light (Sunderland, UK)
Sir Elton John’s Farewell tour and the last ever time he would do a concert in the North East of England was certainly something that we just had to be at right? Well, I certainly thought so and having it at a stadium venue meant that he could get in as many fans of possible to say goodbye.
We had fantastic weather for the event which is always a bonus when attending a stadium gig and even more so in the north east! I have to admit that I was not overly impressed with how the sound was within the stadium, I still cannot fully work out what was wrong with it but on pitch level seemed to be a bit of feedback at times and difficult to fully hear what Elton was saying/singing. It actually sounds much better in the videos that you will see later in this post.
Elton John has had a very long and fantastic career with some truly outstanding hits and we were all ready to sing and dance along with those. Within the set list he threw in some songs that the majority of the crowd did not really know that well (myself included) but that just shows how vast his discography really is and quite frankly he can do what he damn well pleases he is Elton John! I thought the tribute to the late great Aretha Franklin with Border Song was just lovely though. Having had surgery in recent years it was clear to see that his mobility is quite difficult and he did not manage to venture across the stage as he would have done years gone by, but he made so much effort to stand at different stages of songs next to his piano. Damn he can’t half play that piano!
I was lucky enough to see Elton at the arena in Newcastle 11 years ago now and so pleased I am able to say that I was in the crowd for his very last north east show! Sitting on the pitch in allocated seats, although we were encouraged to get up as well being all flat meant it was pretty difficult to see, if it was just standing then at least you could have had more movement (obviously this is more set up related than actually Elton) but I can fully get why its easier to organise with allocated seats and it was better sitting down to wait. Although I think going forward for a stadium gig I will look to get seats (Spice Girls on the side was a great view).
I’m Still Standing has been my favourite Elton song for quite a long time now so I throughly enjoyed singing along to that one (and many others of course). Your Song worked so fantastically as everyone used the lights on their phones to create a lovely scene. Before the final song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton dove into a very emotional speech which was quite frankly so lovely and touching. I am pretty sure everyone was actually close to tears as he thanked the crowd for the support over the years and quite frankly we all need to thank Elton as well for the music and joy it brings.
