The year is 1899 in Wyoming, a band out outlaws led by Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, when a train robbery goes wrong they end up on the run!
When the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang select Harvey Logan as their new leader due to the long absences of Butch Cassidy, this results in a knife fight to determine the actual leader. The plan of robbing the Union Pacific Overland Flyer train on both it’s eastbound and westbound runs is something that they decide to go though with, claiming that the second robbery will come more as a surprise as they won’t expect it to happen twice so close together. Naturally this was never going to be plain sailing, especially when the first robbery goes well.
Sundance’s teacher lover Etta becomes essential to the story and helps them out the best she can, although when everything had gone wrong along with Butch they attempt to go straight and have honest jobs. Again though it was never going to be easy was it? Especially with the Sheriff and many others after them and killing them being the only option.
The true genius of this film was the amazing chemistry between Paul Newman and Robert Redford, what a fine duo they make together! I mean come on that scene of jumping into the water was a particular highlight. Both extremely charming and good looking to go along with it as well really does make for such easy viewing. Newman so effortlessly is Butch Cassidy and you even forget that he is an outlaw and are quite frankly rooting for him constantly. Redford is then perfect alongside him and has just as much charisma and screen presence. Katharine Ross was outstanding as Etta and really kept them both in check in such an easy manner. I really thought she was given some fantastic scenes and lines which made the film even more of a joy to watch.
This film is part of my on going Best Picture Project where I am attempting to watch not only the winners but all of the nominees as well! I can fully understand and appreciate just why this film was nominated for best picture!
