Best Actress in a Leading Role always offers a very varied range of different types of characters. This year we have three that are based on real life people, one from a novel adaptation and one original character. Renee Zellweger has been sweeping this years awards season!
Cynthia Erivo – Harriet
Unfortunately due to a very short limited UK release date I haven’t managed to watch Harriet.
Scarlett Johansson – Marriage Story (Review)
In recent years Scarlett has become one of my favourite actresses due to taking on so many different film roles and making amazing choices! To say Marriage Story is a career best so far is something that I truly believe. Considering she is a double nominee this year as well is testament for how amazing her performances are right now. In this one she goes through so many emotions in what is a very original piece, I would love nothing more to see her with an Oscar.
Saoirse Ronan – Little Women (Review)
Nominated for the 4th time for this role and she is only 25 years old, a truly incredible fate and screams the next Meryl Streep in all honesty. She is an outstanding actress and has taken on some incredible roles, she makes Little Women flow in the best possible way and I loved everything about the character she has and the manner in which she goes about it. One day she will an Oscar (or maybe more) but I still don’t think this role is her time with the other nominees. I wouldn’t be sad if she did win though.
Charlize Theron – Bombshell (Review)
A very worthy nomination as Bombshell has a very tough subject matter with Theron leading the way and taking on a very real person transferring to the screen. Given that I actually know nothing about that certainly gives a very different viewing experience in terms of a film. She is an outstanding actress that is something that can be said!
Renee Zellweger – Judy (Review)
This is a truly amazing and outstanding performance no two ways about it. Renee did a very unique job of becoming Judy Garland. This film focuses on the later stages of her life and therefore is not easy to watch, highlighting her mistreatment as a young actress and how that had a lasting impact on her character and level of obsession and illness. I was blown away by this film and felt broken watching how horrific some of the moments in her life were. Being a fan of Renee Zellweger anyway certainly helped, I cannot see past her winning for this role. Hollywood love to honour Hollywood. It would be a very worthy win!
Who I want to win: Renee Zellweger or Scarlett Johansson or Saoirse Ronan (seriously I would be happy with any of them winning, all amazing and different performances)
Who I think will win: Renee Zellweger
Outside chance: Saoirse Ronan
Who was your favourite and who do you think will win?
