This year for the Best Actress in a Leading Role is a pretty strong one in all honesty and I personally think that is a fantastic thing for women in film! Considering everything that has happened in a past year or two we have seen a rise in good roles for women.
With the ceremony fast approaching let’s take a final look at the five nominees and I will try by best to explain who I think is going to win and who I actually want to win!
Yalitza Arapicio, Roma
In all honesty this is the only performance that is on the list that I don’t fully understand as I didn’t think it was anything special or impressive. But I guess that is because I wasn’t a huge fan of the film as a whole. I didn’t really feel like Arapicio did very much emotional acting and it was more like she was just watching everything going on and happening to her.
Glenn Close, The Wife
This performance truly blew me away, I haven’t really seen anything else like it. The way Close acted a lot with only her eyes is honestly a joy to behold. You cannot help but totally feel for her character from start to finish. Even if you might guess the twist for the finale of the film that doesn’t take anything away from her master performance in this terrific role. I really want to see her holding that golden statue. I feel this was the most moving performance of the year and I was in ore of this powerhouse of an actress.
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
This film is absolutely bonkers and I mean that in the best possible way! Colman is outstanding in the leading role as Queen Anne and took her acting to a different level in this one which makes it a true joy to watch from start to finish. Her performance is truly hilarious as well as attempting to be a very serious Queen. It also takes rumours and facts and mashes them all together to create something very unique. Bringing out the best in Colman and her supporting actresses as well.
Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
There’s always something quite special about the musician to movies and Lady Gaga certainly smashed it in this remake of A Star Is Born. Showing plenty of emotion and getting to also show off her truly incredible voice. But this nomination is totally for her acting ability and more than deserves it. She is outstanding in this film and I don’t think anyone would really be upset if she actually won.
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
A very different performance from McCarthy and I feel even with this nomination she will not get the credit she deserves. A lot of people seem to have a bad opinion of her and cannot see past some of her comedy films that haven’t quite worked out. I was impressed by the serious nature of her performance but still managing to get some one liners in and showing that you really can become very bitter and twisted as you get older. I hope more people will watch this as the film is fantastic with McCarthy leading it!
