The Big Lebowski (1998) Review

“The Dude” who’s last name is Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire called Lebowski. This leads to his rug being ruined and on a quest to be compensated for this mistake he enters into a world he never even knew existed.

With the help of his bowling buddies in particular Walter who still seems to live like he is taking part in War. As The Dude tries to get the money for his rug he is tricked into taking on another task and will be paid very well and highly for just that. What he doesn’t realise is that he is being well and truly set up, well he does eventually but The Dude isn’t the most of switched on people and it takes him a while to really work it all out. That is part of the magic of the film though.

Jeff Bridges is just perfect and incredible as The Dude it really does show how his acting range is really well great. I know it is terrible that I consider myself a huge fan of his and had not managed to watch this film until last night (I had tried once before I promise). I also thought the chemistry he had with John Goodman as Walter was terrific as well, I actually thought he was my favourite character in all honesty. A great pair in a truly off the wall film that is so enjoyable, even when it enters a strange place!

I have to mention the dream sequence as it is very creepy yet perfect as you are watching it and wondering just where that actually came from in terms of it being so crazy. Men with giant scissors certainly stuck in my mind from that moment.

As The Dude and Walter are trying to locate Bunny, a toe has been sent as an attempt to get a lot of money. He is also approached by Maude the daughter of The Big Leboskwi himself who has her own agenda. Something else that I found amusing was the fact that the friends continued to go bowling along with Donny and some incredible scenes with Jesus from a rival team. Showing that no matter who wants to try to kill you, going bowling is a good way to switch off from everything going on around you.

I think this certainly means that I need to watch more of the Coen’s films and really give them more of a chance. I think it certainly seems to be something that has grown on me over the years as I have watched more films, I appreciate the efforts they put into their films to make them very different and standout. That is certainly the case with this one and don’t we just want to watch something that is off the wall and crazy at times. Something that is well away from our normal mundane lives.
