Top 10 – Best Films of 2016

Another year is coming to an end which means another Best Film list must be put together. I am sure I will have plenty of choices of films that people won’t agree with, but this is my list so I can pick what I thought was the best out of the films I have watched in 2016.

Here you can see the films that I caught at the cinema during 2016!

10. The Nice Guys (Review)niceguy-facebookjumbo-v3_zpskfiw4a2k
Now I found this film to be a total surprise with how good I found it. It has a perfect balance between an interesting story, twists and turns as well as humour in such a great way. The chemistry between Gosling and Crowe certainly makes for entertaining viewing.

9. A United Kingdom (Review)maxresdefault_zpsbnsbmt5n
A caught this film at the London film festival the morning after it opened the whole thing. I wasn’t really expecting to blown away by the love story that was involved in it, although it is so much more than just that. Which is why it is on the list, it raises a very important part of history that no one actually seems to have had a clue about. With brilliant performances and moments I really did enjoy it, seems as though it didn’t do that well at the UK box office probably with the release date being a long time after the film festival where it had plenty of coverage.

8. Concussion (Review)

A powerful sports drama which really does make you think and wonder how the NFL actually managed to hide it all for so long. A great performance from Will Smith and I throughly enjoyed everything about this film, being able to understand how it has helped shape all sport around the world with the rule changes for head injuries.

7. Hail, Caesar (Review)

I have to admit that I was expecting to hate this film but luckily the total opposite to that happened and I found it so charming and unexpectedly good. That is why I have included it on the list as I am sure it is a film that will be appreciated more over time.

6. The Hateful Eight (Review)

It seemed to take quite a while for this film to be released after some problems in the UK. I thought it was really Tarantino at his very best. The slow build up to everything then exploding was very impressive along with the performances from all cast members but in particular Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson. Certainly worth giving your time up to watch from start to finish.

5. The Edge of Seventeen (Review)

This film seemed to come from no where in terms of how amazing the story was, it made me wish that I had seen this whilst still a teenager as the messages from it are so strong. Everyone is struggling but we all cope in a different way.

4. I, Daniel Blake (Review)

This film manages to break your heart and open your eyes all at the same time. It is a pretty traumatic experience in all honesty, but it is also such an important film. Important to highlight that people actually are living like this right now and that they aren’t getting very good help when they really need it the most. I guess it is extra special with it being set in the North East as well, Dave Johns who is a comedian by trade is remarkable in such a serious role.

3. Queen of Katwe (Review)

Why didn’t more people see and then talk about this film? It was outstanding and shows such an inspirational young woman and how she managed to not only change her own life but that of her family as well. I guess this could have easily been my number 1 film of the year and the top 3 are interchangeable. I really do demand that everyone who has not seen this film catches up and watches it as soon as possible!

2. Spotlight (Review)

I guess with this one taking home (rightfully) the Best Picture Oscar it is pretty hard to say anything about it that hasn’t already been said. I am going to go with though the incredible cast and performances from them all together and really bringing out the best in each other in this hard hitting drama. I have to admit I do love a good newspaper drama!

1. Hell or High Water (Review)

I saw this film as an Unlimited Screening which did not really have many people in and I am pretty sure on release the film was on for a week or two maximum. Which is such a shame as I thought this was a fantastic film, the story, the acting, the scenes in general everything about it was just well great. Chris Pine and Ben Foster were outstanding and as usual Jeff Bridges scene steals every time he is around. I loved this film and pleased to see it is receiving award recognition so far.

What were the best films you watched in 2016?

  1. I’m in the minority it seems that didn’t really love Hell or High Water but great list nonetheless! I’m so annoyed I wasn’t able to see Edge of 17! I’ve heard such great things about it and it seems it would be right up my alley!

  2. I love that some underrated indies made your Top 10. I really liked Hell or High Water too. There were some impressive films this year. For me, Arrival ranks way up there, and I’d have to consider Sing Street as well. Great list!

  3. Great list! Soooo glad to see Spotlight near the top. It was my #1 last year and it definitely stands up with repeat viewings. Incredible script and ensemble performances.

    1. Yeah I’ve actually watched it a couple of times since my cinema trip at the start of the year. I actually thought I saw it late 2015, and that it was on my list from last year haha!

  4. Spotlight was out in 2015 here so it’s on my last year’s list, but other than that, the only two I managed to catch from the list were The Nice Guys and Hell or High water, and both were EXCELLENT!

The Nice Guys isn’t on my list, though I did really like it, but Hell or High Water is. I haven’t published it yet because I’m having formatting issues with my blog page right now, but tomorrow we’ll see if Hell or High Water takes the #1 spot!

    1. I’ll make sure to check it out when you’ve published it! The different release dates in the U.K. At times are rubbish. Still waiting for so many films to come out that are in loads of people’s lists!

      1. Oh I feel that on an intimate level living in a rural area. So many films we never get a chance to see because they only show in major cities! Even some films that SAY ‘wide release’ really just mean ‘widER release’ so our cinema never gets them.

  5. Interesting choices here, the ones i have seen i like except Hail Caesar (not that much of a Coen Fan) or Concussion my hate for this comes because Will Smith also thought he deserve an Oscar nom for what i thought was an average at best drama.

of what i have seen i think i ended up pick Sing Street as my film of the year, Jack Reynor was supporting performance of the year for me and the songs were so catchy

    1. I just caught up with Sing Street yesterday afternoon (as I was putting together the lists) and I was very impressed with it.

I was so surprised that I actually like Hail, Caesar as I don’t usually get the Coen brothers in all honesty.

I hated the way Will Smith and Jada went on around the Oscars and I don’t think he deserved a nomination but I really enjoyed the film.

    1. I feel really sad about Queen of Katwe as I just don’t think it had a huge audience when it was on a wider release which is so sad. Only three people were in the Friday night screening on the day it opened at the cinema I was at and it was only one for one week at that cinema.

      1. There’s been a few films this year that have been woefully underexposed when they are so good. It’s a shame that the main stream cinemas prioritise the franchise films so much. its only if you have a decent independent cinema that you get a good chance of seeing some of the smaller films. And even then, you have to be quick!

  6. Cool list Some of these are on my to-watch list this year like A United Kingdom and Queen of Katwe. Absolutely loved The Nice Guys. Gosling and Crowe were great together.

    1. I absolutely love hearing that someone has seen Queen of Katwe! I can’t wait to watch it again either, found it to be so inspirational.
