I remember when this film was released at the cinema and I was so disappointed that it did not get a big scale release. I had heard some good things about the film so that obviously makes you want to see it. Having now caught up with it I am wondering why I actually wanted to see it.
It was very messed up from start to finish which in all honesty is usually something that I actually like a lot. Ralph Fiennes was totally off the way and crazy, in a way you have never seen him before. I thought he was the only interesting thing about the film in all honesty. I don’t think he actually paused for breath during his scenes or even stood still.
The biggest problem with the film is that none of the characters are likeable, not even a tiny little bit. We don’t care enough when they are lying to each other and each thing that happens is extremely predictable. If things were different and we were actually shocked by some of the scenes then I think it would have worked in a much better way. I guess it was trying to say that you can never really get rid of someone you have been in love with, not possible. But that is not what we want to believe now is it!
I feel like I have to admit that I almost didn’t bother finishing the film as Amazon Video was having streaming issues and it would not play half way through, I just in all honesty wasn’t really bothered what was going to happen at the end. Something made me decide to persist with it though. A messy strange murder happens and that is when it really does reach the ridiculous heights you are hoping it won’t get to!
Performance wise Fiennes as you’ve never seen him before. Tilda Swinton hardly spoke as her character had throat surgery, which I guess added to the strange nature of the film. Schoenaerts was more annoying with his character who was intimated by Harry. Johnson was just there and had the odd line to annoy everyone. The film was very sex fuelled and had plenty of different scenes, with quite a lot of nudity all of which could have been taken out.
So I certainly won’t be recommending you to rush to catch up and watch this one as I am assuming not many people actually caught it at the cinema. If you have seen it though please let me know your thoughts and if I was just missing either something or the whole point?
I had never heard of this one before now and so had my hopes up for a moment – I love discovering those “unheard of” or lesser known movies, and it does “look” good on IMDB. I’ll put it on my “radar” anyway – just in case I have absolutely nothing to watch one day.

I think you should try and watch it and tell me what I was missing? I have really struggled with the quirky films that have been given high critical acclaim recently, I don’t know if people say they love them to be different?

Ok great – will do. Let me track it down and I’ll give it a watch as soon as possible. Will keep you posted.

Brilliant, I think it was just the disappointment of it not being released nationwide at the big cinema chains after seeing it on BBC Film 2016 and they raved about it.

I think that’s often the case – there is huge hype around movies to get your expectations up….only to have them fall flat. But, I promise I’ll give you my honest opinion once I’ve watched it. Just give me a week or so. Have a wonderful Sunday further!

So…I’m 56 minutes in and keep looking at how much more to go. Somehow I’m totally indifferent to the characters – at this point I’d expect to sympathise with at least one character. Yes, Ralph Fiennes is excellent but that’s about it. I usually like offbeat and weird movies but this is plodding along a bit…I’ll keep you posted…

That’s exactly how I felt with it. I’m sure that’s where I stopped for a while due to the streaming problems. I just don’t get what the point of it all was!

Not a great film at all. It was all rather pointless and who puts a murder right at the end? just as you wished it was all over. The time left to solve the case was laughable. No one really cared if he was dead anyway.

I have not seen it that is why it is not on my website. It is a remake from the French film La piscine (1969) with alain Delon and Romy Schneider a master piece to me anyway. The Critics in France did not like it so I did not see it. Thanks for the heads up. Nice review.

Thanks for that info! Had no idea it was a remake, I guess that explains a lot of things then. As remakes never manage to recreate what people find special about a film!

Unfortunately I saw this film at the cinema and have to advise that it was one of the worst I’ve seen this year (not quite the worst). I found the whole film annoying and can’t understand the critics raving over it (The Guardian have included it in their best films of 2016). Just another example of critics being out of touch with the public’s views.

So glad you really did not like it either. Just didn’t get what points it was trying to make at all!
