A Bigger Splash (2015) Review

Marianne Lane a famous Rock Star is on holiday with her filmmaker boyfriend  Paul De Smedt the peace will be broken when Harry Hawkes an old friend turns up with his daughter (if she really is or not is another question) which really sets events in motion.

I remember when this film was released at the cinema and I was so disappointed that it did not get a big scale release. I had heard some good things about the film so that obviously makes you want to see it. Having now caught up with it I am wondering why I actually wanted to see it.

It was very messed up from start to finish which in all honesty is usually something that I actually like a lot. Ralph Fiennes was totally off the way and crazy, in a way you have never seen him before. I thought he was the only interesting thing about the film in all honesty. I don’t think he actually paused for breath during his scenes or even stood still.

The biggest problem with the film is that none of the characters are likeable, not even a tiny little bit. We don’t care enough when they are lying to each other and each thing that happens is extremely predictable. If things were different and we were actually shocked by some of the scenes then I think it would have worked in a much better way. I guess it was trying to say that you can never really get rid of someone you have been in love with, not possible. But that is not what we want to believe now is it!

I feel like I have to admit that I almost didn’t bother finishing the film as Amazon Video was having streaming issues and it would not play half way through, I just in all honesty wasn’t really bothered what was going to happen at the end. Something made me decide to persist with it though. A messy strange murder happens and that is when it really does reach the ridiculous heights you are hoping it won’t get to!

Performance wise Fiennes as you’ve never seen him before. Tilda Swinton hardly spoke as her character had throat surgery, which I guess added to the strange nature of the film. Schoenaerts was more annoying with his character who was intimated by Harry. Johnson was just there and had the odd line to annoy everyone. The film was very sex fuelled and had plenty of different scenes, with quite a lot of nudity all of which could have been taken out.

So I certainly won’t be recommending you to rush to catch up and watch this one as I am assuming not many people actually caught it at the cinema. If you have seen it though please let me know your thoughts and if I was just missing either something or the whole point?
