The Ultimate Sports Film

As you will always already know if you follow my blog I absolutely love Sport in Film. I work in sport and find the film appreciation of that to be something special at times.

I have therefore decided to try and come up with reasons that make a great sports film and then come up with the ultimate film that well pretty much has it all. Which might be easier said than done considering the high calibre of films available.

In sport to succeed you must have determination, grit, passion and of course talent. But you can very rarely do it alone so you must also have a good support network mainly with the coach you have, we have some fantastic film coaches as well you cannot help but enjoy the performances and at times want then play in that sport!

My all time favourite film is a Sports Film, a boxing film as a matter of fact. Million Dollar Baby but I am resisting all temptation to name this as the ultimate sports film, I am sure that will surprise a lot of people who will assume that will be the pick. Boxing really does offer such a fantastic range of sports films, Raging Bull, Rocky and Southpaw to name just a few. The magic seems to get caught very well with these films.

I don’t think it particularly matters which actual sport it is as they can all fully capture the imagination and feel very real. Any Given Sunday has quite possibly the all time greatest speech from a coach and you cannot help but love that moment even more. Fitting that another American Football film that has a great coach has to be Remember the Titans. Then not forgetting Rudy and Sean Astin’s fantastic performance as the young man who would love nothing more than to just play for a few minutes.

Baseball is another great example that has so many top films, especially considering I am English and therefore don’t really have a big pull towards the sport but for whatever reason totally love it in film. Especially Field of Dreams, A League of Their Own, For the Love of the Game and plenty more. All of which are engaging and I guess more exciting than actually watching Baseball, I have been to one game and had no idea what was going on.

It is such a shame though that my favourite sport is well pretty awful on film, that being football or soccer for my American friends. We have Bend It Like Beckham, Goal! and well The Damned United (which was great) but not really enough for a sport that is transferred around the world.

After thinking about the different sports films I have seen I am going to make a choice (it was a very tough choice) but here it goes . . .

I couldn’t resist Rocky really does have it al and not only one of the best sports films but such a great character Stallone created, who cannot help but love Rocky? He is such a nice guy, will do anything for his friends and has a very supportive if not crazy trainer in Micky. So that is my choice for the Ultimate Sports Film!

What would be your pick?

  1. I would go with Warrior over Rocky because it has all the grit, hard work determination needed but most importantly you literally don’t know which brother will win in the final fight

    1. Yeah I probably should have mentioned the fan part of sports. Including that and my personal favourite Fever Pitch (football not baseball version though)

        1. Yeah but again it was a long time ago. I don’t think I really liked it, but I guess you’re not really supposed to. Just scary that happened between “fans” and still will in certain parts. A similar time to that Green Street came out as well, which the same subject matter but with some violence taken out.
