Ghostbusters (2016) Review

Strange things start happening in Manhattan with ghosts and this leads paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan to do something about it! Even when they are accused of being fake and that it’s all a hoax.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let’s face it everyone has been extremely sceptical about this film, can women really be Ghostbusters and start a new film series off? Well, after seeing the film the short answer is yes they can! Which I am so pleased to be able to say. I found myself really enjoying the film when I wasn’t sure which way it was going to go at all. The cast mainly made up from actors who have been involved in Saturday Night Live (something we don’t get in the UK, but we know all about it).

I liked the way the story built up and we get to know each of the women for the backgrounds they had taken within Science. Erin Gilbert was about to have her whole live made at the University she was working at when her past comes back to haunt her (see what I did with that?) as the book she wrote about Ghosts ends her prestigious job at a top College. This also leads her back to her old friend Abby Yates who with the help of Holtzmann has been trying to put all the things they talked about into reality and be able to stop and catch Ghosts. All pretty good timing with them being spotted in different places in the City!

You have plenty of times to laugh mainly thanks to Kevin (Hemsworth) as the rather dumb but beautiful receptionist. Perfect that this is a man taking on that role this time, not something you usually see at all. I also enjoyed that the film contained many jokes pointing out the fact that they are women, kinda telling everyone they don’t care what you think. Really helping to show that women can do anything that men can.

The most exciting parts had to be the homage to the original film and so many little things that just made you smile, whilst also taking things in a different direction. Plenty of cameos as well to go with that something I had never really thought about but each one more exciting than the last. Love that it showed how much they supported this film.

We get plenty of ghosts with different effects, how they built up the equipment to make it strong enough, funny one liners, good moments and plenty of slime. It also helps to show that Wiig and McCarthy really do work well together. I was massively impressed with McKinnon who I don’t think I’ve seen in anything she adds another level along with Jones.

I hope people don’t just judge this before seeing it! It deserves a chance and you never know you might just be totally surprised by how well they put it together. I would compare the reboot to that of Jurassic Park with Jurassic World in all honesty with the small things to make you smile and remember then a whole load of new characters and issues to go with it.

I personally want to see more from the Ghostbusters!

  1. I lot of people would consider lots of homages to be a weakness in the film. I do have a question though, since you’ve seen it and its something I couldn’t figure out from advertising. In this movie universe, did the original ghostbusters exist, and these girls are just bringing the company back? or is this a start from scratch thing?

    1. It’s a start from scratch approach with New York having never heard of the Ghostbusters.

Yeah I remember people saying the same about Jurassic Park that those parts were weakenesses but I really like that type of thing. How they got the logo and car etc was good for me.
