After a young woman is in a car crash she wake up in a strange room chained to the bed by her leg. Panic sets in as she has no memory of how she got there or who put her there . . .
It doesn’t take long for us to meet Howard who claims that he has in fact saved her life by bringing her to this place. After she was in the car crash he saved her as something strange happened in the world and the air above ground is no longer safe to breathe.
We are given a lot of doubt to whether Howard is telling the truth or not especially when Michelle sees his truck and remembers that is what hit her in the crash. There as another man Emmett in the bunker as well who claims that he helped to build it.
It is the vague details that lead to the doubt and gets the audience thinking and wondering what the truth is. Michelle decides that an escape plan is the only way to really know. The tension in the film is brilliantly done and you cannot help but be shocked by different moments. It certainly swings backwards and forwards from Howard being a nice guy to being a total psycho which makes it difficult to decide what his motives are.
Especially when we hear things about his daughter Megan and what she liked to do. But did he ever really have a daughter? That is something it lets the viewer decide for themselves. It takes plenty of different turns which make you doubt that, even when a photograph is shown.
I had seen a lot of shocked reactions in the build up to the films release and now I can understand why! It constantly shocks you and leaves you wondering what is going to happen next. Exhausting at times as it has such a terrifying tone in wondering how you would react to being locked away and told everyone you knew was gone! The mobile phone moment with no service was probably the first you can really relate to as let’s face it that’s something that has become so important in everyday life it’s unreal!!
The fear of not really knowing certainly has a very high impact from start to finish. What has happened in the outside world, can we get out to eventually see?
The film kinda links a tiny bit maybe to Cloverfield right? Well they’ve said not massively but it does have some similarities in the “attacks” which we are told about. But in all honesty that film was so long ago now I can’t really remember much about it.
I hope we get to see more from this story though as the ending certainly left it open for more from our new heroine! Her reaction to eventually getting outside was pretty impressive though I reckon, certainly something we would have felt!
I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this film as I was certainly blown away by parts of it so thought provoking! I can now read other reviews as well something I avoid until I’ve seen a film.
