GoldenEye (1995) Review

James Bond teams up with the lone survivor of a destroyed Russian research center to stop the hijacking of a nuclear space weapon, with plenty of good action scenes to go with it!

Another new Bond in Pierce Brosnan, his first outing is given a good storyline and some rather impressive action sequences and scenes. Not forgetting a good supporting cast, with a fantastic evil turn for Sean Bean as the former agent who Bond (and the audience) saw die very early on. So a rather impressive outing for Sean Bean to actually die twice in one film. Sorry if you find that as a spoiler, but it would be more shocking if the bad guy stays alive or in fact Sean Bean actually lives in a film haha.

The opening scene followed by the incredible song belted out by Tina Turner is very impressive but didn’t actually really link to anything else in the film? Unless I blinked and missed something? I will admit at this point though that it took me two viewings to get this film watched. On the initial night of watching the film I fell asleep to be greeted by the credits rolling, but don’t worry I didn’t give up on the Bondathon dream and have just caught up with the second half of the film.

I did find the story very interesting trying to stop the nuclear weapon and being liked with the research centre as it did create some impressive looking scenes and moments. Strapped inside the small shuttle being one of them. As far as the Bond girls go I spent a lot of timing thinking I really recognise Xenia but could not place where from (X-Men I know now) but how absolutely sadistic was her character using sex as a deadly weapon. Quite an interesting take as well though, the fight scene with Bond was a highlight as they kissed one minute and then fighting the next. It wasn’t too serious though as was highly amusing at the same time.

Q is starting to really get some of those gadgets up and running now and does share a very funny joke with 007. As well as what is probably my favourite car so far, the BMW incredible. Although I think the fact that I am getting into the more recent films the cars are starting to look better, I do find it hard to like the older fashioned cars (sorry) but I guess that all depends on age etc. I may just take another visit to Bond in Motion down in London after the Blogathon!

Brosnan was decent as Bond, I don’t think he will be my favourite but I think the problem for him with me watching it now is that I have seen a lot more of his films than the other actors so separating him from this was quite difficult. He doesn’t seem to get the best lines, although we seem to have taken a big step away from those type of things in the past few films. All in all though a very solid action film as well as a Bond film!

  1. Great review! They seriously missed out on a good You Only Live Twice joke they could have used on Sean Bean in this one haha! I’ve always loved Q’s “Don’t touch that! That’s my lunch.”
