Big Game (2015) Review

Oskari from Finland is sent to spend the night in the woods to mark his 13th birthday and becoming a man, it just so happens that on this night a plot to capture the President of the United States takes place, with a plane crash in the very same woods!

Now I don’t really remember much about the trailer for this film, but pretty sure I thought it was going to be a comedy. I was very wrong, yes it does have some moments that will make you laugh but it is very much for the action and adventure genre. Guess what as well, Samuel L. Jackson isn’t his usual Samuel L. Jackson kick-ass character, he’s actually a bit of a wimp but don’t like that put you off he is the goddamn president.

It is pretty clear early on who is inside man and behind the main attack, but pretty interesting that they weren’t actually trying to kill the President. They wanted to capture him. I think this made the plot a little more interesting, it was pretty predictable and tried to shock with a couple of twists. It was still very enjoyable even if somethings turned out to be very obvious.

I thoroughly enjoyed the performance from Onni Tommila as Oskari thought he done really well to hold his own with Jackson and even outshine him in different scenes. It was a pretty cool friendship and that Tommila was the more kick ass character. He had good screen presence and I hope to see him in more films in the future.

The supporting cast of Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman and the always brilliant Jim Broadbent add that little extra to the story in the team in the USA trying to find the President. It will tug at your heartstrings a little, especially when Oskari is upset about his task. He had to stay in the woods overnight camping and kill what ever it thought he was worthy of.

Some of the scenes are pretty over the top but that is part of the charm with the film as a whole as it really does work well for it. If you need a film to go and just watch, not have to think too much about and just enjoy the little moments then don’t hesitate to go and see it. Samuel L. Jackson taking on a different type of character is always worth a watch as well, just showing he can do different types.

I certainly enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It certainly does work out well at times having love expectations for films as you really do end up being more relaxed about them!
