My Top 250 Films

I have just started working on my list of my favorite 250 films. I have no idea how long it is going to take, but I am guessing that it is going to be a long project. As I only have 4o written down at the moment and then I will have the difficult task of putting them in order, well the top 10 maybe alright, but then the rest is going to be difficult. I need to figure out some kind of way to help order them. Like a framework, I was thinking of: acting in the film, storyline, favorite lines, favorite moments . . . any more suggestions to help me out?

  1. When it comes to putting them in order, put three or four of them down in the order you like them – that few shouldn’t be hard to rank.

After that, take them one at a time and slot them in (“Like it more than that…like it more than that…oh, I don’t like it more than that“). That what’s worked for me.

Alternately, you could start striking them off as the ones you like least…whittling things down to your very favorite.

I’m kind of a list geek, so such tasks actually give me great joy 🙂 Good luck!

  2. Thanks for the advice 🙂

This is going to be a very long blog, which I think could stretch out over a couple of months. I am up to 111 films at the moment written down in a list. So I am still very far off being able to order them, haha.

  3. How about biggest twists/surprise endings? “The Usual Suspects” and “The Departed” come to mind….

  4. I’m not one for lists. That’s too much structure for me. Top ten is impossible, I will list 9 than have another 20 to chose between for the final place. Then you ask me again a week later and I have thought of some more that I didn’t mention before. Then you have the problem of ranking: how do you choose between Some Like it Hot Fight Club? A world apart but both brilliant.

Top 250 sounds interesting though. Mad Hatters idea sounds good. The other option is to give each film a score and let them fall into place. Something I saw on someone’s blog was splitting their favourite films (top 20 in that case) into before and after 1977 (The year Star Wars came out and the year the blogger was born). Taking it further you can break them up by decade.

As I write this I am beginning to like the idea. Maybe I will do one. We could encourage other blogers to do it and see how they come out.

  5. I completely cannot order my favourite films, thats why the list on my blog is more of a stream of conciousness. Obviously the ones i love most i thought of first, so they’re nearer the top, but new films get added every day!

  6. Yeah we could all start doing them to see which films come out on everyone’s blogs.

I was thinking about listing them in years, seems as fair as any other way to do it. I guess I will just have to list them all first and see which works out the best.

Thanks for your input guys 🙂

  7. good stuff, look forward to reading it. do whatever works for you – were all different. you can start i suppose with actors, genres, nations, anything really. not that it matters, but when i was down to the nitty gritty i put the movies in chunks of ten and then played around with that, putting them in order within their chunk, if you know what i mean. man, i want to watch the goonies now

  8. Thats brilliant that you got 300 so quickly !!!

I have 201 in my list at the moment. Quite strange when I know I have seen hundreds of movies to be struggling to make a list of 250. But I keep looking at films and thinking I dont want that in my list haha.

  9. It wasn’t that difficult I went through my video (yes I still have video’s) and DVD collection and said is that one of my favourites or not. My problem will be getting it down to 250. I still don’t know how I’m going to rank them.
