Romantic Movies – Top 25

As it is Valentine’s day I decided to do my top 25 Romantic Movies. With the best romantic moments and quotes from this selection of my favorites.

25. The Sound of Music (1965)

Fantastic family musical, about Maria (Julie Andrews) a nun who becomes govereness for the 7 children of Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). The children are difficult at first, but then grow to love Maria (as the captain does too). Put in songs around all of the romance and you have one of the best musicals ever made.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • When they both admit when they fell in love with each other. She knew the first time he blew his silly whistle. He knew when she sat on the pinecone on the chair. Finish this off with the song “something good” and a kiss. Perfect romantic moment.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“There were times when we would look at each other, oh mother I could hardly breathe.”

“Theres nothing more irresistable to a man than a woman who is in love with him.”


24. Meet Joe Black (1998 )

Joe Black (Brad Pitt)  is death and he has come for Bill (Anthony Hopkins). But lets him finish off some buisness he has to take care of and ensure his two daughters are happy. But Joe falls in love with Bill’s daughter Susan. She teaches him how to love and as one of the taglines for the film states, no one dies while he loves.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Susan telling her father that she in love with Joe.
  • Joe saying goodbye to Susan.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Take love, multiply it by infinity and take it to the depths of forever . . . and you will still only have a glimpse of how I feel for you.”

23. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a sports agent who is fired for wanting to change the way he does buisness and ends up left with only one client. Dorothy (Renee Zellweger) is the only person willing to join Jerry when he starts his own sports agency. Jerry ends up marrying Dorothy so she can get medical insurance. Although she is completly in love with him, she believes he does not love her and married her out of the fear of being alone and because he enjoyed being father to her son.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The ending with all the corny lines to say awwww over.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“You had me at hello.”

“You complete me.”

“I love him and I don’t care what you think. I love him for the man he wants to be and I love him for the man he almost is.”


22. Runaway Bride (1999)

Maggie (Julia Roberts) has attempted to get married 3 times but always ran at the last moment. Ike (Richard Gere) is a NYC reporter who writes an article on Maggie without knowing any of the true facts. This causes Maggie to complain and get Ike fired. So Ike decides to take a trip and find out what Maggie is really like. And guess what? They fall in love with each other, but who wouldn’t fall for Richard Gere?!?!? But what happens when Ike steps in to replace Bob in the wedding? Maggie runs again, but this leads to the most romantic moment of the movie.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • After gilting Ike at the alter Maggie eventually goes to see him. Asks him to marry her which he refuses. Then she delievers a line he says that people should say before they get married (see romantic quotes) and also gives him a present . . . her running shoes !!!

21. Dirty Dancing( 1987 )

 Frances “Baby” is on holiday with her family and ends up meeting Johnny (Patrick Swayze) the camps dancing teacher. She ends up with him teaching her dance, among other things and they fall in love.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Practicing the lift in the water.
  • Ending, when they get the lift right.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”


20. Ghost (1990)

Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) are a very happy couple and deeply in love. Walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theatre, they encounter a thief in a dark alley, and Sam is murdered. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realises that his death was no accident. He must warn Molly about the danger that she is in. He does this through Ode Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). And they eventually get to say bye properly.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Pottery making scene.
  • Goodbye scene when Sam eventually leaves her, and goes to heaven.

19. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. The film jumps through time and relationships with Harry and Sally always bumping into one another inbetween.

  • Harry telling Sally how he feels after all of those years.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”


18. Shall We Dance? (2004)

John (Richard Gere) is a bored married man and one day sees (Jennifer Lopez) dancing and ends up signing up for lessons. He doesnt tell his wife Beverly (Susan Sarandon) about his dancing, but she is convinced he is having an affair so hires a private detective to find out what he is up to.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • To apologize to Beverly for lying to her John dressed in a tux with a red rose in hand suddenly appears up the escalator in the department store in which she works. (With Peter Gabriel’s “The Book of Love” playing).

Most Romantic Quotes:

“We need a witness to our lives. Theres a billion people on this planet . . . I mean, what does anyone life really mean? But in a marriage you’re promising to care about everything. 17. The Notebook (2004)

Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Ally (Rachel McAdams) meet at a fairground when they were teenagers and end up falling in love. They part for many years but then end up back together again.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Lying down in the middle of the road watching the traffic lights change colour.
  • The love making scene in the old abandoned house.

16. P.S. I Love You (2007)

Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerard Butler) married when they were young and had been together 10 years when Gerry got a brain tumour and died. To help Holly move on with her life Gerry had written letters and sent her different messages to be spaced out over months.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The flashback of when they first met in Ireland and their first kiss.
  • All of the different things Gerry plans for Holly.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Dear Gerry, you said you wanted me to fall in love again, and maybe one day I will. But there are all kinds of love out there. 15. The American President (1995)

Andrew Shepard (Michael Douglas) is the President of the United States and is a widower. He begins dating Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Benning) which has an impact on the peoples votes to keeping him as President. But he wants to be able to find love as well as be the President.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Dancing at the dinner for the French President.

Most Romantic Quotes:

 “You’re attracted to me, but the idea of physical intimacy is uncomfortable because you only know me as the President. But it’s not always going to be that way, and the reason I know that is there was a moment last night when you were with ME, not the President. And I know what a big step that was for you. 14. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is a token taker at a train station and had a fantasy about a man who used the train everyday. One day she saves his life by jumping onto the tracks to save him. She ends up in the hospital with him and everyone thinks she is his fiancce. His family fall in love with her, she then falls in love with his brother.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The wedding when she eventually admits it was the wrong brother.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Peter once asked me when I fell in love with Jack. And I told him, “It was while you were sleeping.”


13. Pretty Woman (1990)

Viven (Julia Roberts) is a prostitute and Edward (Richard Gere) is a wealthy buisness man who picks her up one night. He offers her money to stay with him for the week, and yes you guessed it they end up falling in love. They end up together at the end, although at one point this doesnt look likey.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Edward climbs up the fire escape to Viven’s apartment (hes afraid of heights).

Most Romantic Quotes:

“I’m gonna treat you so nice, you’re never gonna let me go.”

Edward: “What happens after he rescues her?” Viven: “She rescues him right back.”


12. French Kiss (2005)

Kate (Meg Ryan) travels to Paris to try to get her fiancce back, on the flight she meets Luke (Kevin Kline) who seems to keep finding her all the time. He had a motive, he hid an expensive necklace in a plant which he left in her bag. Luke vows to help Kate get her fiannce back, but when she can get him back she realises that Luke is the one she wants to be with and stays in Paris with him.

11. Bridget Jones Diary (2001)

Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a 30-something singleton who is unlucky in love. She goes for men who are know good like her boss Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) who cheats on her. In the meantime she had met Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) who she thought was know good at Daniel lied about things that had happened in the past. Bridget eventually realises that Mark is the one for her.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Mark buying Bridget a new diary . . . for a new start.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Bridget:  Nice boys don’t kiss like that. Mark: O yes they f**king do.”


10.  A Walk to Remember (2002)

Jamie (Mandy Moore) and Landon (Shane West) are the unlikey match in this high school tale of finding yourself and changing for love.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Landon helping Jamie complete the list of things she wants to do before she dies.
  • Two places at once, having her stand over the state line.
  • Landon being taught to dance by his mother, so he can then dance with Jamie.
  • Gettting married in the same church her parents were married.
  • Jamie making Landon a better person.

Most Romantic Quotes:

 “Maybe God has a bigger plan for me than I had for myself. Like this journey never ends. Like you were sent to me because I’m sick. To help me through all this. You’re my angel.”

9. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Two cowboys, Ennis (Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) spend time working on Brokeback Mountain and the unlikey happens that they end up falling in love with each other. Even though at first they did not give into it. Years go by without them seeing each other. They then begin to see each other more regularly visiting Brokeback again, leaving their wifes and children at home.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • After four years they eventually see each other again. Which leads to Ennis pushing Jack up against the fall and kissing him.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“I wish I knew how to quit you.”

“Tell you what. The truth is . . . sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.”


8. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) joins the Navy and in the process meets Paula a local girl. After going through a few different things together he eventually realises that she is the one for him leading to one of the most romantic moments in movie history.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • After graduating Zack (in full white uniform) turns up at the factory where Paula works. Picks her up and carries her out.

7. Never Been Kissed (1999)

Josie (Drew Barrymore) is a reporter who gets the chance to go back to high school undercover pretending she is a teenager again. Which causes problems when she falls for Mr(sam) Coulson (Michel Vartan). The first time round Josie was the school geek, but this time she can be popular and this changes everything for her.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Final scene, when Sam eventually turns up and kisses Josie in the middle of the baseball field.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“I’ve kissed a guy . . . i’ve kissed guys. I just haven’t felt that thing . . . the moment when you kiss someone and everything around you becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person. And you realise that, that person is the only person your supposed to kiss for the rest of your life. And for one moment you get this amazing gift. And you wanna laugh and you wanna cry cause you feel so luck that you’ve found it and so scared that it will go away all the same time.”


6. Notting Hill (199 )

She’s Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) one of the most famous movie stars in the world, he’s William Thatcher (Hugh Grant) and owns a travel book shop in London. Randomly bumping into her in the street starts off an affair which at first seems that it will be short lived.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The first kiss – “surreal but nice”
  • Climbing over the fence into the garden and sitting on the bench.
  • Anna taking William the painting and telling him she will give up everything for him.
  • When William realises he was an idiot for turning her down, makes a lovely scene at her press conference.
  • At the press conference when Anna is asked how long she is going to stay in London. She replies with “indefinatly.”
  • Last shot, of them sitting reading on the bench, Anna clearly pregnant.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“After all, I’m also just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.”

“Its as if i’ve taken love heroin and now I can’t ever have it again.”


5. Gone with the Wind (1939)

Scartlett O’Hara (Viven Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) have a very long love affair. Throughout most of it Scarlett wants to be with Ashley, and when she eventually realises that her husband Rhett is the one for her is it to late?

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The first kiss between Scarlett and Rhett.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Scarlett! Look at me! I’ve loved you more than I’ve ever loved any woman and I’ve waited for you longer than I’ve ever waited for any woman.”


4. Casablanca (1942)

Set early in the second world war. Two former lovers meet in Casablanca.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Letting her go at the end, as she will have a better life without him.

Most Romantic Quotes: 

“We’ll always have Paris.”


3. Titanic (1997)

Jack (Leonard DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) meet aboard the Titanic. An older Rose is telling the story for the very first time about how Jack saved her from the life she was being forced into having.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • When Rose poses for Jack to draw her.
  • Rose saving Jack when he was handcuffed after the ship hit the iceberg.
  • Rose getting out of the lifeboat when she realises there isn’t another boat for Jack.
  • Jack letting Rose lie on the door in the water.
  • When Rose dies at the end, the last scene of being aboard the Titanic and meeting Jack again.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“A woman’s heart is an ocean of secrets.”


2. Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Christian (Ewan McGregor) is a young writer who moves from London to Paris. When he gets to Paris he ends up in the Moulin Rouge club, where he encounters Satine (Nicole Kidman). Like all of the other men he falls in love with Satine. She mistakes him for the Duke but then Christian ends up writing the new play for the Moulin Rouge. Christan and Satine spend loads of time together and fall in love with each other. Christian even writes a secret song for them “Come What May”. While the ending is tragic, this is still one of my favorite romantic movies.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • Christian writing the secret song for Satine.
  • Towards the end when Christian ends up on the stage for the performance of the show and pays his “whore”, he walks away but she starts to sing “Come What May” and he realises that she was pushing him away to save him.

Most Romantic Quotes

” The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”

“Come what may, I will love you until my dying day.”

“Tell our story Christian, that way I’ll-I’ll always be with you.”


1. An Affair to Remember (1957)

Nicky (Carry Grant) and Terry (Deborah Kerr) are a couple who meet on board a ship and fall in love. They agree to met 6 months later at the top of the Empire State Building if they still feel the same way about one another.

Most Romantic Moments:

  • The scene on the stairs when they are trying not to be spotted together.
  • The ending, when she eventually tells him she cannot walk anymore. But she did go to meet him thats when the accident happens and when he eventually admits that he wait for hours.

Most Romantic Quotes:

“Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories . . . and we’ve already missed the spring.”

“If you can paint I can walk – anything can happen . . . right?”
