The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) Review

Life isn’t measured in minutes, but in moments.

13 Oscar nominations . . . Hype . . . Months of wondering after seeing the trailer every week til its release . . .

So what do I think of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” ? Fantastic, heart wrenching, incredible. Just a few of the words I would use to describe this touching tale which when it all comes down to it is a love story, with a twist. That being Benjamin was born in the body of an old man and getting younger by the day. After seeing the trailer week after week for a few months, I did really want to see this film but I wasnt really expecting to like it as much as I did. I really did fall for it, in that I would have loved to see Daisy and Benjamin be together forever. Even though that wasn’t physically possible, as while they were almost the same age. His body was aging in the wrong direction.

Daisy even points out that they have met in the middle, his growing younger just happened to match up with her growing older when they reached their forties. This then proceeded for Daisy and Benjamin to spent a lot of time together, as they both knew that it wouldnt actually last. Although their love for one another certainly would last.

“I wanna remember us just as we are now”

Benjamin and Daisy

The following quote is what a young (but old looking) Benjamin is told in the home he lives in. I thought it was very deep and meaningful and a sign to Benjamin as what was to come in his life, and everyone life. Kinda pointing out you should not take anything for granted and try to appreciate the people in your life while you have the chance to appreciate them.

“Benjamin, we’re meant to lose the people we love. How else would we know how important they are to us?”

I found so many of the different quotes to contain so much meaning not only towards the film, but to make the viewer think in terms of their own life and compare to the story of Benjamin and everything that he went through in his life. Don’t get me wrong though, the film wasn’t tense, it was very light hearted at times with some very funny moments and lines. Especially when people assumed as Benjamin looked old that he was. But the audience knew different and the first time he got drunk and had sex where amusing moments.

I thought the whole story was a totally different idea and very refreshing to watch something like this, even if it did nearly have me crying at the end and in a few other parts. But when all is said and done it was a love story and what a marvellous love story it turned out to be. This really does have my vote for the best picture winner at the Oscars, as out of all the nominations this has been the best in my opinion. It would be a shock if it wins but I would just love to see it take that award.
